Kick-start my rockin', rollin' heart

For the last couple of weeks, he's been spending a lot of time with Poison, getting used to having him around, in his space. He's been nursing something, a warm and liquid knot behind his ribs. He's not examined it too closely. He definitely hasn't said anything to Poison about it. Sometimes, he finds himself flustered, but he pushes it down, ignores it and, eventually, it passes.

Sort of.

They'd arranged to go out and test drive the I.D that Kavinsky had made for him. Poison wanted to go dancing and Jack can get into clubs now, so...why not, right?

So he's standing on a corner, just down from the club, waiting for Poison to show. He hadn't, entirely, been sure what to wear for something like this, so he's there in black t-shirt and jeans, one of his more fitted leather jackets, boots. He's got product in his hair. Double row of eyelashes give the effect of eyeliner.

It's weird, maybe, but...he's actually kind of nervous.

Poison starts dancing a little as soon as they make their way down the stairs. This is already good - this is what he's missed. And it makes him think of the people that he misses, and it makes him think of Fun Ghoul, and he tries desperately to push all that out of his head because no. They're not here. They're probably dead.

But he's here. And he's alive. And he's going to fucking dance, okay?

He glances back at Jack to make sure he's still close and he gives him a grin. "This your first time at one of these?" Hey he doesn't know, Jack needed a fake ID after all.

"Yeah," says Jack nodding, drawn to that grin, scared to let Poison drift too far from him in the crowd. He shrugs out of his jacket, turns away for a moment to check it, shoving the token into his pocket, leaving him in short sleeves and inked skin. "Yeah, it's my first time. You're totally taking my clubbing virginity right now, man. Congrats."

Poison reaches back to get Jack's hand once he's free of his coat. "I won't lose you honey," he promises. "Your cherry is safe with me."

He pulls Jack into the crowd. He wants to get the lay of the land first, wants to figure out where the bar is. He's not sure he wants to drink a lot but it'll be good to know, if only so he can get water.

"Oh, Jesus." He blushes, which doesn't stop him squeezing Poison's hand, holding on tight as they move through the crowd. There's a low, hectic heat in his cheeks. "Don't you dare."

"Which one, lose you? I won't." He pulls Jack to the bar and leans on it. He needs to hydrate, because he's planning to sweat, but he's maybe eyeballing the drink specials. Just in case.

"You dance, Jack?"

"I dance," says Jack, leaning his elbows on the bar, head turned, watching Poison look at what's on offer. "Are you asking?"

"I mean, I'm gonna hit the floor no matter what. Just wanted to know if you wanted to stay close or fend for yourself." He waggles his eyebrows. "Might be some cougars out there that'll snatch you up."

"I doubt it." He laughs at the elaborate waggle of his eyebrows, though, shaking his head. "I could probably fend for myself without you, man."

But does he really want to?

"I mean, is that like a bet? Because I'll totally rescue you if some housewife wants to be your new mommy."

Suddenly, Jack's grateful for the dim light because it hides how red he must be.

Because he's totally not interested in housewives, and he wonders how obvious that is. Maybe it's not as obvious as he thinks it is. Maybe.

Jesus. Why was this easier when it was Bex.

"Keep your hero fantasies to yourself, man."

"I'm the real thing baby." Poison downs the water that is put in front of him. "Even went down in a blaze of glory."

It's easy to be flippant about it when he's feeling high on the press of people and already swaying to the beat of whatever's playing.

When he's done with his water he looks at Jack and grins.

"Then let's dance motherfucker. Or are you gonna put that ID to further use?"

He hasn't seen Poison like this before, hectic and alive with energy that somehow feels electric. He's already moving to the music and Jack feels like that's going to be infectious.

He glances at the bar, shakes his head. Not drinking feels like a habit that's going to stick.

On impulse, he offers Poison his hand.

Poison grins and grabs Jack's hand. He spins them into the crowd of bodies, searching for a spot empty enough for two bodies.

He's sure that Jack is gonna get noticed, a prime target, even. He's young and good looking and Poison maybe feels a tiny bit protective.

And maybe he also wants to see if Jack ever does actually let loose. Being Zen doesn't count.

He tries not to focus on the press of Poison's hand in his, tries to focus more on the press of bodies around him, the strobing lights. His shirt is made of thin stuff and, already it's starting to stick across his shoulders.

Poison lets go of Jack's hand only so he can get his arms in the air. He moves effortlessly, and maybe he ends up dancing a lot with his hips but whatever the song is calling for it okay?

Or maybe that's how he dances and he never paid attention.

And okay, maybe he peeks at Jack, because he's curious.

Jack finds the rhythm easily enough, hands in the air, one pushing into his hair as he moves. It's mostly hips too, but that's because it's the only way he knows how to dance.

And, yes, he watches Poison dance. Because Poison dancing? Is kind of beautiful.

As soon as he catches Jack watching, Poison grins. More than once the question what are you doing has flashed through his head but he's kind of ignoring it right now. He's having fun, and it's easy to forget everything in the flashing lights and moving bodies and it feels good to be noticed, maybe, as something more than a symbol of resistance.

And alright, he notices someone else noticing Jack. He moves closer and casually drapes his arms over Jack's shoulders. "Someone's checking you out," he quips. "Should I run defense or back off?"

Poison's a little shorter than he is, so Jack has to look down. Poison's arms slip around his neck and Jack feels his face immediately go hot. He glances over his shoulder in the direction that Poison's looking and then, without saying anything, he slips his arm around Poison's waist and tugs him a little closer.

"Running defense then." He grins and moves in closer, even without the tugging to prompt him. "Or are you finally gonna say what I think you've been thinking, Jackie?"

He has an actual rabbit in headlights moment, freezes with his arm wrapped around Poison, hips grazing as they dance. He ducks his head.

"Shit."

"What? Am I reading it all wrong?" He ducks his head, trying to meet Jack's gaze.

He looks up, meets Poison's eyes and after a long moment, shakes his head. He wasn't sure it was possible for his face to feel this hot. Somehow, this had been easier with Bex.

He slips his other arm around Poison, hand grazing up, following the line of his spine cautiously.

"You're not reading it wrong."

"Oh good. I'd feel real weird if I had. Or really egotistical." He grins. "Am I uh... am I your first guy crush?" He's heard the name Bex, and the she/her pronouns, but he's never heard mention of any, y'know. Guys. And he's curious, because Jack's been awfully bashful a few times. Maybe it's just the teenager thing. Poison doesn't remember that. His puberty had been reckless and devil-may-care.

Guy crush. Jack almost winces because it sounds so...dismissive. He nods, though, leaves his hands where they are because, so far, Poison hasn't tried to push him away.

"Something like that."

It's the best Poison can come up with - Jack's young, and Poison remembers what it felt like when he was figuring out himself. Everything was weird. Nothing made sense. Thinking about any of it seriously freaked out teenage Poison a lot.

And it's hard to think about being a good... whatever he is... when Jack's fingers are tracing up his back.

"Something like that?" he prompts. He doesn't want to put words in Jack's mouth.
